Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Program

The Institute of Business Administration, Dhaka University also offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree programs as per rules and regulations of the University of Dhaka. These two programs are centrally controlled by the Board of Advanced Studies and the Academic Council of the Dhaka University.

Admission Requirements

The Institute of Business Administration awards M.Phil. degree of the University of Dhaka. Candidates possessing the Master's Degree of any discipline from Dhaka University or from any recognized university with at least second class/divisions in all the four public examinations and having good academic record may apply for admission to the M.Phil. Program of the IBA. The admission to the M.Phil. Program is subject to the recommendation by the Institute's Academic Committee.

Duration of the Program, Admission Test and Specialization

The M.Phil. Program is a two-year full time program, and the duration can be extended for another year only, on request and on recommendation of the Academic Committee of the Institute. The Institute of Business Administration conducts the admission process as and when advertised by the University. After receiving the applications, the candidates are asked to sit for an Admission Test.

The students of M.Phil. Program can specialize in any of the following areas:

  1. Human Resources Management
  2. Financial Management
  3. Marketing Management
  4. Economics and Development Management
  5. Management Sciences and Information Technology

The M.Phil. Committee

M.Phil. Program at IBA is managed by the M.Phil. Committee of the Institute which is constituted with five senior Professors with the Director in the Chair and one/two area coordinator. The functions of the M.Phil. Committee is to scrutinize applications and recommend to the Academic Committee for approval and recommendation to the Board of Advanced Studies. Constitution and recommendation of names of Examination Committee for First Year Examination of M.Phil. Program and constitution and recommendation of names of Examination Committee for the examination of M.Phil. Theses. These functions are done in accordance with the ordinance and regulations for the degree of Master of Philosophy of the Dhaka University as outlined below.

The M.Phil. Committee consists of 5 senior Professors and an area coordinator. Dr. Iftekhar Ghani Chowdhury is the current Chairman of the M.Phil. Committee of IBA.

Ordinance and Regulations for the Degree of MPhil

(Approved by Academic Council Meeting: 13.2.1995 and by the Syndicate Meeting: 27.3.1995)

ORDINANCE

The Degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) shall be awarded by the University in recognition of the successful completion of the M.Phil. Courses of Studies and Research as prescribed by the Academic Council. The Courses of Studies for the M.Phil. Degree shall run for two academic years. The terms and conditions regarding admission, examination and other matters relating to the Degree shall be prescribed by Regulations enacted by the Academic Council and the Syndicate.

REGULATIONS

1. Admission

(i) Candidates for admission to the courses of studies for the M.Phil. degree must possess a First Class or Second Class Master's degree or an equivalent degree of this University or of a recognized University and shall have at least Second Division/Class in all earlier examinations (S.S.C., H.S.C. and graduate examinations). The qualification may be relaxed by the Academic Council on the recommendation of the Academic Committee of the Department /Institute in exceptional cases.

(ii) The Master's degree must be in the subject concerned or in a related subject permitted by the Board of Advanced Studies and the Academic Council.

(iv) The application for admission to the M.Phil. Program must be recommended by the supervisor(s) and the Academic Committee of the Department/Institute concerned.

(v) On the recommendations of the Board of Advanced Studies about M.Phil. admission the Academic Council shall give the final approval.

(vi) Any change of the supervisor or the topic of dissertation will have to be recommended by the Academic Committee of the concerned Department/Institute and approved by the Board of Advanced Studies and the Academic Council. A separate prescribed form shall be used for this purpose.

2. Courses of Studies

(i) Candidates admitted to the M.Phil. courses shall be full-time students of the University.

(ii) Candidates serving in any organization including the University shall take leave of absence for at least one year at the time of joining the M.Phil. course. Provided that this requirement may be relaxed by the Academic Council on the recommendation of the Academic Committee of the Department/Institute concerned in the cases of applicants from institutions of higher education or research organizations.

(iii) The Departments/Institutes will prescribe the Courses of Studies, which must be approved by the Faculty/Board of Governors, the Board of Advanced Studies and the Academic Council.

3. Examinations

(i) Students for the M.Phil degree shall at the end of the first year of their admission appear at a written examination of 200 marks (number of courses to be determined by the Department/Institute concerned) and at an oral examination of 100 marks. The Controller of Examinations will fix the date and time of the written examination in consultation with the Chairman of the Examination Committee.

(ii) There will be two paper-setters for each paper/course including the course teacher .

(iii) Each paper will be examined by two examiners including the course teacher .

(iv) For the first year examination there shall be an Examination Committee consisting of four members: three internal members of whom one will be the chairman and one external member. Provided that more than one Committee may be appointed depending one the nature of the courses offered by the Department/Institute.

(v) The Academic Committee of the Department/Institute will nominate the members of the Examination Committee for approval of the Academic Council.

(vi) The pass mark in the first year examination is 50% on the average for the written papers and 50% on the oral examination.

(vii) The student, who fails to get the pass mark or is unable to appear at the written examination or cannot complete the courses of studies for valid personal reason, may be allowed one more chance to sit for the examination but only in the next academic session on re-admission. The permission of extension will be given by the Vice-Chancellor on the recommendation of the supervisor and the Academic Committee of the Department/Institute concerned.

(viii) Scholarship will not be renewed for a candidate who fails to pass the first year examination in the first attempt.

4. Transfer to the Ph.D. Program

(i) Candidates who have successfully completed the first year M.Phil. courses and have passed under 3 may be transferred to the Ph.D. program on the recommendation(s) of the supervisor(s) certifying satisfactory progress of research work and the Academic Committee of the Department / Institute concerned.

(ii) The recommendation(s) for transfer will be sent by the Academic Committee of the Department / Institute concerned directly to the Board of Advanced Studies and to the Academic Council which will accord the final approval.

5. Dissertation

(i) A candidate for the M.Phil. Degree shall submit a dissertation on his / her research work at the end of the second year to the Controller of Examinations through his / her supervisor(s).

(ii) The student will perform the research work under the supervision of teachers of the Department/Institute who will be of the rank of an Associate Professor or Professor .

(iii) If the student fails to submit hislher dissertation in due time helshe will apply for extension before the expiry of the time on the recommendation of hislher supervisor(s) and the Academic Committee of the Department Ilnstitute concerned.

(iv) The total number of supervisors of each student must not exceed two where one may be from another Department or research organization recognized by the University.

(v) Each dissertation shall be examined by an Examination Committee consisting of three examiners: the convener ,one external examiner and the supervisor. The Examiners shall send their reports in sealed covers to the Controller of Examinations.

(vi) On receipt of the unanimous opinions of the Examiners from the Controller , the Convener in consultation with the Controller will fix a date and a venue for the Viva-voce Examination.

(vii) The Examination Committee in which the convener will preside sh conduct the Viva-voce Examination.

(viii) The unanimous recommendation of the examiners will be placed before the Academic Council, which shall recommend to the Syndicate for the award of the degree.

8. Examination fee (b)

(i) Examination fee for the first year examinations Tk. 300

(ii) Examination fee for the dissertation Tk. 500

FOR TEACHERS ONLY

General

(a) Teachers who are giving M.Phil. courses will have number of contact hours for such courses counted in their teaching load.

(b) Teachers will take attendance in the first year classes of the M.Phil. students who must attend at least 75% of the lectures.

(c) No teacher will supervise more than five research students in one academic session.

(a) Other charges payable to the University is Tk. 980.00 (the other charges are payable for one year at a time)

(b) (i) Exam. fees for 1st yr. examination (now payable) are including center fee is Tk. 750.00

(ii) Exam. fee for the dissertation (now payable) is Tk. 1200.00
